First just wanted to say hello to everyone,,My question is,can I easily switch between media portal and windows??The reason I ask is because I plan to run some emulators and do some basic joystick gaming.also any advice(recomandations) on controllers,remotes etc etc would be great.ty,sorry again if questions are silly

Sure, lots of people use a shared computer that sometimes is used for MP, and sometimes is their desktop or gaming PC. MP even runs in a window, so you can use it while doing other tasks. In configuration, there's a checkbox for "run fullscreen" that can be disabled for windowed mode.
As far as using emulator software, make sure you check out the My Emulators plugin (search the forum). You don't really even need to leave MP to play emulated games. For other apps, you can use My Programs (another plugin).
As far as hardware recommendations for remotes, start with the wiki. It has a section on "hardware selection help". The remotes section is here. The general advice I'd give you is to use an MCE remote. That's nicely supported out of the box.
