Alright, this is the first time I am using Mediaportal, as a matter of fact this is my first custom built ever that I started about mid January, and I have been trying to setup Mediaportal for a few weeks now and have run into some trouble and was hoping someone could help me.

To summarize what has happened, I was having trouble playing mkv movie files (playback would stutter), so I got SAF v6 and install it hoping to use the PDVD11 codecs as this seems to be a fairly recommended setup.

After installing SAF v6 I still didn't see PDVD11 as an option so I uninstalled it and got a copy of PDVD12. Between uninstalling SAF and installing PDVD12 I went to the registry to see what codecs were there. I found that PDVD11 (probably from SAF) was there so I removed it before installing PDVD12 (i believe this is what went wrong). I then registered the PDVD12 codecs through cmd prompt and regsvr32 command and they are now available in Mediaportal to select as an option for all playback codecs. So I set the codecs to PDVD12 and tried to play an mkv again and now I get an error that it cannot be play due to missing Video: AVC and Audio: AAC 4.

These files playback fine in PDVD12 so the files have to be okay.

So before I reinstall windows 7 completely and start from scratch to fix anything I have done, I was wondering if anyone could help.

Thanks in advance,

Robert

Best thing is to try "blank". The currently recommended solution on windows 7 is to install the LAV filters (they come along with SAF) and to use the LAV Splitter & Audio and the MS Video Codecs.

You could also try the LAV Video Codecs, which by now support HW acceleration, but MS codecs are quite good. You can find LAV as an MediaPortal Extension when starting the Extension Installer.

After installing SAF v6 I still didn't see PDVD11 as an option

You need to click on hoborgs name, then select option "start a conversation" ask for unlock key, this will correctly install PDVD filters from SAF6, just registering the main filters does not work, as they have a lot of dependencies which need to be enabled as well :(

Thanks all for the replies, as for SAF unlocked I have already recieved it from Hoborg I have just yet to try it as I thought I could just use the PDVD codecs I had from the Software. I will try installing this tonight to see if I can rectify the problem. Otherwise I will try the recommended LAV filters above.

I will try to attach logs as soon as I can. I also have a screen shot of the error message that pops up when I try to run an MKV file.

I will let you know how it goes.

    Thanks again!!

Great News!!! SAF V6 seems to have solved my issues (Thanks to Hoborg for all the great work!!!). It now lets me select and playback my mkv files using PDVD12 codecs for video and ffdshow/LAV for audio. Everything seems to be playing back fine now with suround sound that I have passing through the 6-channel input of my reciever (really just using it as an amp at this point).

So thanks for all the help/advice.

I have a few more issues as I strive to get the coveted WAF. She is pretty impressed with the MovingPictures plugin for movies, the MyEmulators plug for our games, the visual menu presentation of the streamedMP skin, and likes being able to use the remote to control the who system. However she really like Itunes and grew up with Tivo so I have a couple more issues to resolve before I can fully get full acceptance.

Here they are, (This may not be the place to post this so if you can point me to were it should be I would be greatful):
    1. The first one I have posted elsewhere in the forums, when I switch between analog channels the station tunes for about a second, then a blue screen blips and returns to the channel and plays back fine. I have and onboard HD4290 graphics card, and hauppauge wintv-hvr-2250 tv tuner. I was hoping new codec settings would help with this but it didn't seem to so far. I don't know if this information will help but I tested for this "blue blip" using WMC7 and XBMC TVserver pluggin, and the WMC7 does it occasionally, and XBMC didn't seem to do it at all but took a very long time to tune the channels. Would this be something in the timeshifting controls?
    2. I noticed that I have alot more program information in my tvguide.xml file (using XMLTV plugin, and mc2xml (free version)) than acually displays in the tv guide in mediaportal. Is there a way to force the tv guide to show more of this information, like actors and such?
    3. Finally she is not very impressed with music sorting/searching capability so far. Now I will admit I have spent the least time trying to set this up out of all of the features of Mediaportal so I may just have not looked at it hard enough yet, but is there a way to view the music database information more like itunes list view?
    Thanks again.
