Hello,

I completely rebuilt my HTPC a while ago, using Vista 32 bits Ultimate. It's a clean install. I have everything running fine execpt for one thing: .mov files.

My still camera takes videos using .mov extension.

QT Alternative 2.2.0 is installed. The .mov files play fine in MP Classic, but there's no way Windows Media Player (and MediaPortal) can recognize them.

QT Alternative says:

QuickTime DirectShow filter allows you to play QuickTime content in all DirectShow enabled players. Without this filter QuickTime content can only be played in Media Player Classic

But maybe it's not meant to work in Vista.

Is anybody able to open a .mov file within WMP?
Am I doing something wrong?

Look at the wikipaedia website and search for quicktime alternative.

This should explain why, without infringing anyone's copyright.

Would always recommend Apples own original software for .mov files

Or use Rad Video Tools and convert them to Divx/Xvid AVI. That's what I did with the videos recorded using my Nikon Coolpix.

Thanks a lot for the tips.

I've installed an older version of QT Alternative (1.56) that seems to work. Now, the .mov files open in WMP flawlessly.

But... Still can't play them from inside MediaPortal. Should I configure MP or ffdshow in any certain way?

I don't know if this would work, but try changing the file extensions from .mov to .mp4. Also, make sure you have Haali & ffdshow installed.

Hi,

Yes, Haali and ffdshow are installed. However, when rendering a .mov file in GraphEdit, it doesn't use ffdshow at all. There's no way to render the mov with ffdshow.

If I try the same on another machine running w2k, it uses a "QuickTime Movie Parser Filter" wich splits audio and video from the movie. This splitted video is then taken by ffdshow. Unforunately, M$ says this filter is removed in Windows Vista. More details: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms787535(VS.85).aspx

Correct me if I'm wrong. It is my understanding taht MOV is just a container, the same way as AVI or MKV. Then, a MOV could contain videos with several codecs. How could I find out the codec my still camera uses to make the MOV movies? I tried GSpot, but it only gives info about the container, and says nothing about the codecs used.

I'm missing a point in here, but I can't find out what it is...

Just convert them to AVI, MOV is not properly supported on Windows no matter what.

Thanks for the tip, but it looks more like a workaround than a fix itself.

It might be the option if you have just a few movies, but I have lots of tiny movies taken with the still camera along with the pictures. And the number keeps growing... It would be a pain to convert them all...

I'd just like to be able to view the movs within MP in the living room, I have no problems with the movs in other computers (wich run neither Vista nor MP).

MOV files are nasty..i try to stay away from them at all costs..better off converting them..then they work on anything..and ur preference...MP

there are lots of small video editing app that are free... try www.videohelp.com for a converter app

Why would you want file type that is really only supported by Apple.
