Okay I have a choice:

1) Apple TV for $300 --- includes remote, play media, etc. Minimal setup

2) Media Portal for $0 --- but need to buy a MCE remote for $40, need to buy some kind of IR echo device for $50, need to buy a video composite out PCI video card for $50, need to buy a composite-video/stereo-audio converter to attach to my old television ($25). Then I need to do lots of Maximum setup, and run a cable from my computer to my television. Grand total $165. I know some already have much of this hardware, thus costing less. Also MP is a little less stable on some platforms.

So which do I pick? Maybe I want the best of both??

hi,

i'm maybe wrong but i dont think apple tv tries to reach the same goal as mediaportal: no tv tuner, no content outside itunes' realm, etc...
they are two very different products and aimed at two very different audiences as far as i can see

I think that the Apple-TV and the MediaPortal are two convergent products. They are starting to look the same, and are heading down the similar path.

Then you add in MS Media-Center-Edition, and maybe the Slingbox, and the various Satellite PVR boxes (Dish Network for free with subscription); for comparison.

Lots of convergence happening. Maybe Apple TV in the fifth generation (hay IPOD has five generations) will see a combined super box. Maybe even a built in television, HDTV, and satellite tuner, but that is five to ten years from now.

Yes the MCE remote has USB connectable blasters. I know that, but there is something else needed if I put the computer in the other room.

This IS NOT a dedicated media box device for me. Rather it is a multi-use box that can be quickly converted from generic PC, to generic media box.

So I would need an IR relay or echo device to transmit the IR from room to room.
