I was watching LiveTV and went out of the room for a couple of minutes and when I came back, the picture had frozen and sound had stopped. MP was completely unresponsive, even though I left it for about 5 minutes after pressing various buttons to see if it would respond.

There is some breakup on the picture stuck on screen, so maybe there was a weak signal but even so. TVService doesn't appear to have stopped, so I think this is different to the error regarding that, which I've already reported.

I woke up this morning and was surprised to see my PC hadn't gone into standby. When I turned the TV on, again the picture had locked up (obviously I must have left LiveTV running) and MP was completely unresponsive. I had to use Task Manager to close MP again, but this time it caused the whole PC to lock up and after a while, a BSOD referring to ati2mtag (I believe it was).

So I rebooted and made the attached logs after that.

    Hi,

There are many reports on the web of crashes with ati2mtag, including

Ati2mtag error what does this mean? - TechSpot OpenBoards

Although I don't doubt that you have TV problems, I think it is sensible to try to exclude all other factors first, so that when a team member with the relevant expertise has chance to look into your problems, at least they can focus on the one issue.

I keep saying this, but I think that most of your problems will go away if you update to Windows 7. Let's be honest, XP is 10 years old technology, and most manufactuers will not be putting much effort into drivers for XP. Windows 7 is much more stable, so it may be that any errors between MP and the OS are handled more gracefully.

I know this is not a cheap option, but you should be able to get an OEM licence for Windows 7 home premium for about £76. It has to be worth it just to save you the stress.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

I expect you can find reports of almost any .dll, .exe, etc. causing crashes if you look (alright, maybe not all of them but you know what I mean).

I can't see that the page you linked to gives any reason to believe there's a major problem with ati2mtag. One person says the problem went away when they replaced their motherboard. My System Event Viewer shows loads of entries for it, but only saying Category - DVD_OV, Description - UVD Information, so I don't think they're errors as such, more like notifications.

So I think this is probably a MP problem, related to weak signal maybe.

I'm beginning to think you've got shares in Microsoft, with all your pushing to upgrade to Win7 ;)

It's not going to happen anytime soon, as I'm still finding things out about tweaking and securing XP even after running it for years, so I don't want to have to start again with a new OS. Besides, I'm planning on setting up an old P4 MP box for my brother and I don't think it would run Win7 too well, not without adding extra RAM which I can't afford anyway, so I want to get MP working well under XP.

As for saving me the stress, well I've got plenty of that to spare. Money, not so much :)

    Thanks anyway.

ati2mtag is part of the ATI GPU drivers. If you see that in BSOD it is either sign of driver bug or HW issue.
