I'm new to mediaportal (finally trying it as alternative to VMC). using vista ultimate 32bit completely clean install.
mediaportal1.0RC4 with client/tv server one same box (brand new install, express "HD" option)
In the Uk, using blackgold 3450 6-in-1 dvb-s, dvb-t card, have astra 28.2 and standard uk dvb-t feeds.

two problems

BBC-HD from dvb-s plays fine - now that I have installed cyberlink powerdvd, it uses that h.264 codec to watch tv. But it will not record - I get zero length files. this problem doesn't seem to be completely isolated to bbc-hd though, I think I may have seen it one someother bbc channels. I have changed the default recording directory if that makes any difference.

Web-epg won't import. I have configured web-epg.conf, run webepg, I get a tvguide.xml file (which when I open it with notepad contains lots and lots of valid-looking program data). I enable xmltv plugin in tv-server, configured it to point to the correct directory (default is wrong on vista), ran a manual import. This reports "channels imported 105, programs imported 0, import status <blank>. I then end up with an epg in my MP tv-guide that contains nothing whatseover.

any clues where to look for a newbie?
thanks,
Ian

Make sure you are using ts as recording format.

I then end up with an epg in my MP tv-guide that contains nothing whatseover.

In the second tab of the xmltv plugin, do the channels match and show as mapped correctly.

Also the TvGuide.xml needs to be in the program data\team-mediaportal\mediaportal\xmltv folder which contains the DTD file.

    .

Thanks Paranoid, that makes a difference, I seem to be getting something, the files are no longer zero length. I supposed I could have guessed that its probably not going to do h.264 to mpeg on the fly. still a little tricky to test properly without an epg to set programmed recordings from sleep etc though.

In the second tab of the xmltv plugin, do the channels match and show as mapped correctly.

with a load/refresh many channels are there and most of them have matched guide entries. I haven't set web epg entries for _all_ of them so some have a RED against them on this screen .
I have seen a couple of different behaviours now. in the second tab if I hit save, an import on the first tab then works (I get 2600 or so programs imported). Into media portal itself and I see programs listed for a small subset of my channels. some are dvb-s and well into the future so its clearly not off-air it must have come from the web-epg. But its probably only half a dozen channels out of a hundred or so. back out of MP gui, back into tv server config, check the import first tab again - zero programs found, and it reports "tvguide.xml not found". Then tv server config crashes :(

another start of MP, and now I have limited now-next type data and my into-the-future data has gone...

What do I need to set the TV channels->TV epg grabber section of tv server config to?

Also the TvGuide.xml needs to be in the program data\team-mediaportal\mediaportal\xmltv folder which contains the DTD file.

yes TVguide.xml is very definately there as is xmltv.dtd. The precise directory is C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\xmltv that appears to be the default place that webepg save is and I haven't moved it. I have opened this file by hand in notepad and it contains lots of data for lots of different channels.

this being vista, is it a permissions thing? do I need to turn off UAC?

one of my reasons for coming over from the dark side is annoyance with epg bad behaviour in vista tv-pack, so I hope this isn't too hard to get working!

thanks paranoid. that thread sounds very much like an unfinished piece of work (have read it 3 times, still can't conclude which set of files a new guy should try) but would be nice when it is done.

I now have xml / webepg working reasonably well (not tested to death yet), so I decided to celebrate by moving my htpc to the tv lounge to try it on my 50" hdtv. and then it crashes :-( - see my separate post.
