I'll be buing a copy of windows soon to run on my HTPC (replacing a slightly iffy "Pro" version)

    Costs I've found are:

    XP Pro - £95
    XP home - £59
    XP MCE - ~£70

Is there any reason I cant use XP Home? The only issue I have found is that the MCE remote driver install is a bit of a pain (however I have found instructions).

Any issues other than that? Is it worth spending an extra £10 on the MCE version? Which I assume includes MCE remote support and also DVB fix etc?

I don't want to buy XP Home and find out that I cant do something I need to in MP!

    :D

OK so I did a few searches, and it seems that there is no real decision either way as to which is the right choice.

I think I'll get XP Home and then just get the drivers for the MCE remote. Then again, I might fail at the last minute and end up getting XP Pro ;)

Gee, those are high prices, my xp pro cost me £50, 2 years ago of ebay along with certificate and cough, piece of original hardware that went with it.

Vista Ultimate only cost me £75 with similar specs, as long as i have the certificates, there has been no problem with reinstalls.

Without the certificate of Authentication, just would not touch.

I didn't really want to get a copy off ebay - if I was spending money on a copy of windows then i wanted to make sure i didn't get a dodgy key etc!

I ended up going with Home, as there was nothing extra in Pro that was needed for the HTPC. I considered MCE, but I read something that made me change my mind (cant remember what it was offhand!)

    Same question for Vista?

Sorry for butting in, but I have the same question about Vista. Which edition to use for an HTPC? ie, exclusively using the PC for running Media Portal hooked up to a home theater system.

Im looking at Home Basic, since it appears to provide what I need. Only issue I can see is that it appears that one cannot remote desktop into it? Remoting in can be a real time saver for maintenance etc from my main desktop machine.

    Any thoughts?
