multiple htpc and server solution help required (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone

New to mediaportal - recomended by a friend, after many months of disatisfaction with windows media centre.

I have installed mp1.2 and found it very good and works well but having a few difficulties trying to set it up to suit what i'm trying to achieve.


My target/ set up is this.

I have 3 windows home servers where i store my movies, music, family photo's and videos.

I'm also wanting to store recorded tv on here but i don't want to record directly here from the htpc due to network activity restrictions.

I have a htpc running win7 and mediaportal with a dual tv card in the lounge

i have another htpc running win7 in the Den, onto which i'm planning to put mp which has a dual tv card also

I have 2 popcorn hours in bedrooms



regarding play back of server stored items using mp all is fine its just being able to split down the videos so they don't all appear in 1 big collection.

I'm wanting to split them down into
Family videos
music videos
Recorded tv

pictures,movies, music and tv series are fine using mp and plug ins - moving pictures and tv series

for recording of tv my plan was to locally record on the htpc's, then batch file transfer them to the server - the aim is that all recorded tv is available from any where regardless of where it was recorded and without the need to leave the htpc's running.

being able to specify in mp multiple locations for retrieving the recorded tv shows would sort this- maybe this is possible and i just cant find it

As stated earlier i don't want to directly record tv to the server due to network limitations - my servers are remote from the bulk of the network they are coupled to a local switch and a single cat 5 connects them to network switch to which all other items are connected.Unfotunately for noise reasons ( wifey says so) the servers must stay where they are.

Just to note - it is best to consolidate your tuners into one TV Server. MP can't connect to more than one TV Server, and TV Server installations don't talk to eachother.

The way I'd do this is have three folders or shares - one for each group - and add the those to the video folders list.

So are you talking about the "link" from within the TV section - recorded TV?

Thanks for the push in the right direction with the folders for video


All is now good and I've got a work around for all my requirements now

Just need to sort file naming etc


Very impressed

Don't know what I was doing trying to get windows media centre to do what I wanted
