Music Play lists and random shuffle (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

Firstly I will apologise up front for possibly a question that has been asked a thousand times, but I have looked up FAQ's, done google searches and reviewed plugins and still can't work it out.

I have a few hundred music files on a network drive filed by artists and albums. How do I make a playlist of different songs across different artists and albums to play. The answers I have found involve doing a certain amount of scripting etc...which is a little beyond me.

I would of thought their was a simple way of marking the tunes to be played within media portal, saving that list, and then pressing the play button. But it doesn't seem to be that straight forward. How do I do this?

The other request is, is their a way of hitting a "button" and it will randomly play all music from a particular directory? I have the similar challenge for showing random photo's.

The only option I have found is to create a directory, copy/duplicate the music across into a directory and play the music from there. Not very pretty, and a large waste of space.

Thanks everyone in advance.

Apart from the mentioned plugins, you can also do the following .

Lets say you have music organised as follow (just an example)
    music
    music\a
    music\a\abba
    music\a\aha

Now, while in the MediaPortal Music SHARES view you can select any of the mentioned directories with context menu (i on remote) and select "add to playlist". This will add all music files under it to the current playlist. If you do this with directory "a" in my example, it will add all abba & aha to current playlist.

Switch to "playlist view" and you can "shuffle".
If you think you might want to use this playlist again in future, just save it and later load it again. Setting in MP Configuration to auto shuffle playlist might also be handy.

Now in your photos. Imagine a layout like this:
    photos
    photos\2009
    photos\2008
    photos\2007

You can now copy one of you saved music playlists to directory "photos" above (or any other :) ). Rename this playlist file in the "photos" directory to folder.m3u.
Setting in MP Configuration for "random slideshow" on.

Go to the "photos" directory inside MediaPortal and select R.Slideshow (Recursive Slideshow). This will now automatically start the music playlist (random) as well as picture slideshow (random) of all directies underneath.

Thank you, for a simple, easy to understand, explanation of how to do this.

In my travels in HTPC land, I found Playlist Creator 3.5 available here Downloads - Playlist Creator 3.5.0 Freeware Software .
This nifty little app generates custom playlists in either m3u or pls format. Just drag folders and/or individual files into the GUI, tell it where to create the playlist, name it and hit create.

I find this a lot easier than messing about with the remote, especially if you just want individual tracks from many different directories.

    I hope this app helps.

    Cheers

Thanks for the instruction on this. :D
I have been looking for a way to have a Pic Slideshow while music was randomly playing. Do you by chance have a way of controlling the random music that is playing? Like skip to next track? Or pull up playlist and select next track?

Could it be possible to reverse the whole process somehow? Play playlist in the Music menu so you have control of playlist & have random pics showing?

    Hi

I have mapped my remote buttons for SKIP and PREVIOUS to work on the music playlist while slideshow is running. Remember that normal arrows (left/right) will still work on the photo slideshow, so nothing lost. Not at home now, but I think it is mapped to action NEXT_ITEM, but if you strugle I can confirm when I get home.

As for the rest of your questions, sorry, not currently possible.

I'm afraid I would need a little help with remapping keys, not sure how to go about that. I'm a noob.
My left key < on remote goes back 1 Pic, and right > goes forward 1 Pic while Random Pics & Music is playing.
Arrow keys l<< & >>l do same thing.
My remote is standard MCE Remote.

Instructions/Guidance remapping them would be very much appreciated.

    Got keys remapped, works great.

    Thanks
