every application you install on WindowsXP depends on "other M$ Stuff" as you call it

Both are free, both are very reliable, both are grown-up applications.

so there is no "use this SQL Server or you are doomed" answer

some "hate" Microsoft SQL Express just because it is from Microsoft
some "hate" it because it is not open source
some "hate" it because they had bad experiences with it (same the other way around for MySQL)

The major amount of the Team Members is using Microsoft SQL express (including me), and we are happy with it.

So the question is not which is better (because both are great), the question is which one you "like" more.
