HTPC Case: Mac Mini

Power Supply: Stock
Remote: Microsoft MCE Remote
TV: Pioneer 436HD 43" Plasma
TV - HTPC Connection: DVI->HDMI

Problem description:
1. Launch MediaPortal
2. Choose "My TV"
3. Choose a channel and change to fullscreen viewing
4. Watch TV as normal
5. Turn off TV
6. Wait a few seconds, minutes, hours or days
7. Turn TV on (you will now hear the sound of Windows 'recognising' the TV again, as if you've just plugged in a USB device)
8. Audio but no picture. Nothing works except quitting MediaPortal. After quitting desktop and everything is fine. Relaunch MediaPortal and everything is back to normal.

Also I tried the above but instead of watching TV I left MediaPortal at the main menu. When I power cycled the TV, Windows 'dong' indicated the monitor had been re-recognised but the picture did not disappear and MediaPortal worked correctly. It appears this bug only occurs when watching TV.

This is particularly anoying as it means I must restart MediaPortal each time I want to watch TV!

Help most appreciated on this one. If I can be of any assistance in testing and troubleshooting, please let me know. :D

    Hi,
Not sure what you mean by turning off TV, is that the TV tuner in computer or the TV you watch MP on as a monitor, because then it could be a graphic card driver issue?

    Hi,

I mean turning off the TV (that I watch MP on as as a monitor) that is connected via DVI to the Mac Mini. I don't believe it's a graphics card/driver issue as the "blank screen" only happens if you're watching TV in MP. If you power-cycle the TV anywhere else, it works perfectly.

FYI I have also now tested the problem using TVE3 and the TV Engine plugin and the issue is the same.

    you mean that you:
    1. start mediaportal
    2. watch TV
    3. turn off your TV-Set (LCD-TV / whatever)
    4. turn TV-Set on again -> all is black, no MediaPortal GUI at all ?

100% correctomundo. Totally black screen although if i move the mouse, the mouse point appears fine. It's as if MediaPortal has been thrown out by the display device (monitor) disappearing then reappearing (you can hear Windows making the "device connected" sound when the monitor is turned back on). Everything is working fine - you just cant see anything.

this sounds more like an issue of you TV-Set (tourettes has simmilar afaik with his LCD-TV).

i will try when i get home this evening. but afaik, this doesnt occur.

Could you try same without MP running? If it works, then the issue is inside MP and caused by the DirectX device getting "lost" and MP doesn't recover from that.

Bah, my bad. "If you power-cycle the TV anywhere else, it works perfectly." - so it's indeed a bug in MP.

can you confirm, or is it just a guess?

i just tried that here with curent svn of MediaPortal and TV-Server.
MyHTPC is connected with a VGA-cable to the LCD-TV

    1. started MediaPortal
    2. entered MyTV
    3. tuned a channel and selected it to watch in fullscreen
    4. watched the channel
    5. turned off the LCD TV
    6. waited ~1minutes
    7. turned LCD TV on again
    8. and there i see MyTV playing the same channel in fullscreen

so i can not confirm that.

Any chance you can test with DVI/HDMI? This might have something to do with the way Windows handles analog vs. digital devices. I will grab a VGA cable and try the opposite test on my setup in the mean time...

    Hi,
The problem is when you turn of TV & windows deactivates that part of your graphic card, then MP which renders on that suddently doesn't work & "dirextx lost" causes a "crash" in MP & doesn't recover.......
