Newbie questions. Fresh install – slow computer. (1 Viewer)

I am using an older Dell computer.

Specifications:

2.4 GHz. Pentium 4
2 GB RAM
XP SP3, All updates.
Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1600
Nvidia GeForce 9400GT – 1024MB – DDR2 - DVI

I have set it up with the system on C, MediaPortal on D, and media files on F.
I have made many images of the system clean, with codecs, etc.

None of the installs I have done are working correct.

Do I need to install the HD codecs to watch HD TV?

Every time I do it causes my television to be clipped and not full screen.
It also causes the television to be jerky with some releases.

I don’t need HD for anything but television; I don’t have a blue ray disk player.

Is it best to start with the stable release? Some of the skins and plugins ask for a newer version.
