Sory, looks like my fault. I should have realized "your card does not support radio" actualy means "you need to install a MPEG2 encoder". I thought the MPEG encoder may have been the TVs problem (and it was) but it scanned and found nothing, leaving an error log. It realy would be nice to have meaningful error messages in all these (and many, many other) cases.
So, ther is still a bug here but it is not that it doesn't detect my radio but that it give an incorect error message.
the page listing what MPEG encoders work and where to get them is very hard to find and the links are out of date too

in the requirements in the manual (GeneralRequirements - MediaPortal Manual Documentation) does not even mention radio at all and the only mention of an MPEG codec says there is already one included for watching TV (refering to the decoder rather than the encoder I needed)

I will post a suguestion in the otehr forum for the error message change.
