No recording and viewing possible at the same time (1 Viewer)

Hi folks,

I'm pretty new to MediaPortal since I just put a Technisat CableStar DVB-C Card into my PC and installed this great piece of software.

My problem is that I'm not able to record *and* watch a TV program at the same time - and I'm talking about the same channel here - even though it seem's to me that the TV server is in fact able to do timeshifting and recording at the same time:
  • When I open the manual control in the TV Server configuration and choose a channel than I can start timeshifting with the button and it prints the path of the timeshift buffer file as you can see in the first screenshot.
  • Subsequently I start recording with the right button and I get two file names printed, the one of the timeshift buffer and the one of the recording file

Now when I try the same with the MediaPortal client software and no previous recording and/or timeshifting on the TV server active I get the following issues:
  • When TV is switched on in the client software it's impossible to start recording manually ("Record now"). Pressing this button only creates a scheduled recording which starts immediately in the moment I turn of the TV in the client
  • During a recording a click on the "TV on" button results in the following error message: "Unable to start timeshifting. Unknown error"

Is it not possible to do timeshifting and/or viewing a channel while recording the same channel with a single card?

Thanks in advance for your help!
Stefan

I have noticed the same thing - when my DVB-S card is recording something, I cannot watch it at the same time from a MP client on a different computer.

Is this a "feature" that is being looked into?

Later: I'm sure this used to be the case but I am currently recording BBC HD (on my server) and if I try to view it on my workstation it offers the choice of watching the recording from the beginning or from the current time - i.e. live - so it does work after all.

Do you mean recording and viewing on the same computer (singleseat installation) or on different computers? Because in my case it's a singleseat installation, but if you got it to work over the network then I'm going to try that too.

It seems to be working for both methods - watching MP on the server and watching it on a client when recording on the server.

I'm sure I had a similar problem to yours at one stage (along with several other problems) and in the end I uninstalled and reinstalled MP completely and that seemed to resolve most of the problems so I'd suggest trying that. You can export your TV Server settings so you don't have to configure everything from scratch.

Later: This is odd, it was working when I wrote the above but, having just updated my DVB-S2 card driver, I can now "Play recording from beginning" but can no longer "Play recording from live point". I get a "No free card available" error.

Previously in TV Server / Manual Control I could see one entry for the recording and another (on the same card) for timeshifting but now I just see the one entry.

I just rolled back to the previous version of the driver and it lets me record and view the live scream simultaneously so it appears to be a driver issue. (I use a TBS8920 card)

Even later!: I reinstalled the new driver and it works correctly again so maybe it is something a bit flakey in MP? I'm confused now.... :)
