Hi, I'm thinking of setting up some Non-PC-clients to my tv-server. (For example the Popcorn Hour A-100)

The reasons for this are:
1. Cheap to buy (350$). (A new PC cost a lot more.)
2. Absolutely silent as they have no moving parts.

The clients shall be able to se EPG, livetv, recorded tv and shedule recordings, stream videoand music files from the server.

This, to me, is the ultimate setup for a home entertainment.

Is there a way to do something like this today, or will that day come in the near future?

Thanks for any answer..
/Magnus

I have just seen that Popcorn Hour can connect to the GB-PVR and show live-TV....
Hoping for something like that for the Media Portal.... I don't wanna change Media Center-App... :(

I am looking for something similar, so allow me to add the capability of showing DVB subtitles of recorded TV.

    Best regards

    as far as I've read:
the Pocorn box can play rtsp streams.... but this won't help you too much, because you can't swtich channels nor see epg, but you could watch a tuned channel of the MP Server Box...

would be a cool thing if it was possible to install software on the box (Iguess its Linux) maybe there will be some homebrew firmwares in future?

You'd need somthing like MPTv Client running on Popcorn... then I'd definately buy it ;)

    cheers

After the first release of TVServer then we are thinking of adding uPnP server support.
This will allow uPnP client devices (renderers) to work with TVServer.
The support is a long way off as this will be around the time MP2 is more mature and TVServer starts leveraging that code base.
The capabilities will depend on the client until more clever transcoding techniques are brought in to support the client devices limitations.

SageTV does exactly this with their HD extender. SageTV software + HD extender bundle is $250. I do not have one yet (hopefully it is on its way - they have been out of stock for a long time!) but all reports say they work fantastically well. Can't see a way to make it work well with MediaPortal - but for me now there is little need given it does most of what MediaPortal does in most cases.

It's a shame you can't initiate an RTSP stream on a specific channel by ID or something. Then at least you could bookmark channels on any device which supports RTSP.

If the MediaPortal team want to take this Popcorn Hour road, they should take a look at the mvpmc project: mvpmc port. There already is a side project mvpmcx2 that works for GBPVR on the PCH, that will be integrated in mvpmc. It's an open source project and it has great potential. For GBPVR, I believe it uses VNC to get the GBPVR interface on the PCH. It would be great if this would be possible for MediaPortal.

VNC is not a good way, as it will cause really slow screen updates with applications that are graphics heave (like MediaPortal is).
