All the "required" components are installed on my PC, however only the family PC has an internet connection (and the family PC does not have the required components because it does not need them).

I do not necassarily think that you intended to alienate me and people in my situation, however it cannot be denied that there has been a presumption that every single individual who attempts to use MediaPortal will be at an "always-on" internet connection. Is it a lot to ask for a standard installer?

No this is not true, as we developped the offline installer with this situation in mind.

So where is the problem if you have all requirements installed ?

I extracted the deploy tool from the installer with uniextract, everything went fine until...

Also note:

According to the installer I require (this is the family PC BTW):

Direct X 9c
Visual C++ 2005 SP1
Visual C++ 2008
Windows Media Player 11
MySQL Express 2005
MySQL 5

I have all of these components on my PC, but since my PC is not connected to the internet (it's on the other side of the house) the installer refuses to start (so I extract it's contents to find the deploy tool and got the error in the image above). According to infinityloop's instructions on the page previous, one must select "...then select "Only Download required Components" -> Next -> Download -> Done" while on a PC with internet connection. Doing so will 'download' the above mentioned components (MySQL, Visual C++, etc) onto the family PC; but the family PC has no use for MySQL, Visual C++, etc. Furthermore, our internet plan limits us to 25GB of downloads (and uploads) per month. I do not wish to waste any of the remaining usage to re-download components that are already on my PC.

To summarise:

1. My PC has all the required components.

2.The family PC does not.

3.The family PC does not need MySQL 5, MySQL Express 2005, Visual C++ 2005 SP1 + 2008, Windows Media Player 11 or Direct X 9c.

4.I do not wish to waste our internet usage downloading things that my PC already has and that the family PC does not need.

So, is there a way to go about this without re-downloading these components? Or perhaps the *.xml file could be available for download (as I would rather download a tiny *.xml file as opposed to all those components)?

You are doing thing on your own, not following the wiki or the normal way of doing, this is why you are facing issues.

1. Download MP 1.0.1 installer

2. Run it from your PC, select download only, select the language and the architecture of your family pc.

3. Once completed, you are taken to a directory, copy it to a USB stick.

4. Attach the USB stick to your family pc and run DeployTool from there.


BTW, beside *SQL need for Tv-Server, all the other components MUST be installed on the family pc to have MP up and running...

When I do that, as I have already said, it tries to download the "ApplicationLocations.xml" file. My PC does not have internet connection. Therefore I cannot download the "ApplicationLocations.xml" file.

I understand that I need SQL and the other components to run Media Portal, but it is my PC with which I wish to run Media Portal. The family PC has the internet, but not the components. My PC does not have the internet, but has all the components. If I run the installer from the family PC, it tries to download the components which the family PC does not need, as I will not be running Media Portal from the family PC.

All I need is for the installer to start on my PC, but since my PC does not have an internet connection, it cannot download the "ApplicationLocations.xml" file.

What's missing in DeployTool to get it ?

Just run the setup from "PC A", choice download only, select your architecture and language. Wait all is downloaded and then copy the folder that opens at the end to a usb pen drive

Go in your "PC B" and double click MediaPortalDeployTool

I was impressed with Mediaportal 0.2.2 a long time back so when I decide to make my new HTPC I searched and found the updated version 1.1.1. I was excited to include it as a candidate for my HTPC needs.

Until I found:
1. need MS-Dotnet 3.5 SP1.
2. Windows XP SP3, atleast.
3. Live WWW connection for 3rd party components, which BTW I already have installed on my HTPC.

I was planning to share my experiences with various FOSS HTPC solutions on my various HiFi-HTPC forums.

unfortunately I cannot include mediaportal because I absolutely cannot/will not have my HTPC network connected to the internet, nor can I install Dotnet (without which mediaportsl install will not even start) on the computer that is connected to the Broadband internet because its running one of my other FOSS products called Linux.

Most of the guys I know have this rule about NOT connecting Windows machines to the internet; As admin, or otherwise.

I have tried all the FAQs and went to the WikI posts: I have to conclude that mediaportal developers have a pretty naive attitude when it comes to understanding user needs. Hope a mature project leader will make the next release as an independant downloader and a list of dependencies from 3rd parties, that the user can download seperately. I will check back to see if that happens; but until then I will play with the other boys in the field. Keep the one-click installer for the kids who have their windows xp PCs connected to the internet with admin privilages.

BTW, thanks for Mediaportal 0.2.2.

You can start the installer and ask for a "download only" installation type. Obviously the installer itself is written in .NET so...
