the most popular would be a real bonus
The annoying thing with some media portal plugins is, that you have to search for all the prerequisites yourself (and first you have to know what you need ...). In times of broadband internet a 2MB filesize is nothing to worry about.
Do you think about pre-configuring the addon for the most popular emulators? It would be really nice if you just had to point to the location on the harddrive where the emulator and the roms are and everything works ...
What do you mean with "having the thumbnails included?". For the games? How would it work?
If I have a ROM named "Street-Fighter-II-haxx0redition", what thumbnail would get applied to it? Will it search for the most correct match?
I vote for simplicity, and if it's simple to have them included it would be great! For example, just put the ROMs in a folder and tell MyEmulator where to find them - and voila! - they show up in MediaPortal with thumbnails... that would indeed be great!
If not possible, I vote for moving the images directory out from the MediaPortal standard thumbnail cache folder and let the user specify where the images are located instead. I like to keep them all together =)
I will not include any images for games, only emulators - but it sounds like I will include 10 or 15 of (what I guess) the most popular emulators. I could think of having preconfigured emulators in the future, when there are more options to keep track of.
that sounds reasonable (and still have a link to the full thumbnail pack). cuz i also care about filesize. i'm on satellite internet and they limit how much i can download per day. :[
I would go a little further and make different Packages only with the Plugin, Plugin + Thumbnails and Plugin + Thumbnails + Most popular Emulators!
Everyone can choose what kind of Plugin fits for him and with broadband-internet and even Drivers for Graphic Cards with about 40-80MB I think most people would also download the "All-in-One"-Version of MyEmulators...
Since all Emulators are for free and mostly under GPL, how about a package / mpi with the Plugin, well known Emulators and Thumbnails for this then "pre-installed" Emulators? Should not be the Problem to include PJ64, ZSNES, ePSXe, VBA, Nestopia, Gens and Mame into some Folders together with the PlugIn with MPI or a .7z File at all. It would make things way easier to only copy Roms and Thumbnails and make it to one of the best alternatives for Emulation on Media Centers I think, cause easy and simple, even for the very beginners (like me, but I made it so far^^)!
That is indeed a very attractive idea. Then one would just install the emulator and everything would be configured. The problem is that it is hard for the beginner to find ROMs, and they might be confused when everything else is included, but no games. But still, I might do this as an alternative MPI package.
Everyone looking for an EMU for his Media Center should know where to find some roms.
And on the other hand, having roms without the originals isn't legal either^^
But I think this should not be your problem as developer, emus and the plugin are legal and I hope you'll make a bundle easy to handle for everyone cause usability makes you the way to mainstream and lets your plugin spread, with a good and useful plugin also some donations would be possible I think, so just give it a try
