When I press ! to view the render info on screen, what sort of values should I be expecting to see?

The FPS seems to hover around 18 and the "jitter" is on an ugly-sounding 40+
Also, the white vertical line that repeatedly scans horizontally is very noticably "stepped" in its movement, although every now and then it seems to suddenly move nice and smooth for a second, before reverting to its usual juddery pace.

Could this by why horizontally-scrolling credits/tickers etc on TV shows look so bad for me!?

Am I one of the old folk that still calls "!" a pling?!

Jitter can vary depending on your video source. DVB can cause rather high looking values but movies such as dvd or xvid should be low (10/15 or lower). If the FPS is that low you should be seeing a lot of dropped frames?

High cpu usage could be the cause of a low framerate, which might be because of the graphics card.

Thanks, Callifo, two replies in two minutes in two different forums - you're my personal supporter today

Oddly, the frames dropped showed zero although I suspected it just wasn't being updated. Also, the cpu usage was up at around 40-50% so while not exactly idle, didn't look like it was being overly stressed either (it's a non-HT processor).

Time for some more experiments I think - I'm borrowing a better graphics card to see if it helps.
