I have a Philips 60pp9100d/37 HDTV, a GeForce FX 5200 and I am running Vista 32 Ultimate with the default Vista drivers (NVIDIA has not written Vista drivers for this card). My PC is connected to the TV using a DVI2HDMI cable. My resolution is set to 1176x664 by using PowerStrip and making a monitor profile that it automatically gave me.

Here are my issues. Due to the fact that I can not find any specs on my TV as far as what resolutions it can do I am stuck using 1176x664 since this is the only resolution I could find that would not over-fill my screen This problem is at this resolution all the text is blurry and very hard to read. I can find many resolutions that look great but they over-fill the screen (can't see the start bar, etc). I also can not adjust the overscan using the custom resolution button because it is greyed out.

What would be my best option to fix this. I am assuming that the custom resolution button is greyed out due to my video card. Prior to installing Vista I was able to use NVidia's screen adjustment program to fit my screen, but since I can not install their drivers that option is out.

Do I need to buy a new video card? If so could someone recommend a low cost AGP card that would allow for custom resolutions, has a DVI out and will work well with Vista. This is for a HTPC running Media Portal. I will not be playing games on it, so it does not have to be that fast or have much memory. If someone could recommend one or another option so I don't have to buy one it would be most appreciated.

Also I am not sure if this is related but from time to time the video will jump a few inches to the left and then center itself very quickly on the TV.

Hi,

From what I can find on the internet your TV is expecting -

480i (720x480 interlaced)
480p (720x480 progressive)
1080i (1920x1080 interlaced)

This is what you should be sending to it. But you probably can't do that due to NVidia not producing a new Forceware driver for the FX5200.

You could try this one -

Forceware 96.85

It is the last Vista driver to support the FX5200 (its rubbish).

Even if you do send it 480i/480p/1080i you will probably still get some overscan due to your TV being a CRT rear projection, but it should give you the best picture possible. Adjusting you TV for overscan (service menu?) is normally better than messing about with custom resolutions.
