Picture has lines in it on tv when connected via VGA (1 Viewer)

Hello

I've got an old toshiba lap top that I am trying to use as a media centre pvr. It's working ok but when I have connected it to my tv via VGA the picture has some wavy lines in it. Strangely when I plug the power source for the laptop into a different plug socket on the other wall it works fine. However this is not a practical solution. Does anybody know why it is doing this and do you know any practical solutions??

Hi

Given your hum on sound and now this, you need to look at cable routing - your picking up interference due to where your cables are passing OR (not expert here) it could be your introducing interference into earth line, affecting a single socket - this implies your earthing in socket is bad - unless your qualified, get electrician in, if you (and I really hope not) have an earthing problem, you & anyone using socket could be at risk (in real life I am a risk manager, paid to look on the black side), but like being paranoid, it doesn't mean they are not out to get you anyway:-<

Good luck & hopefully it's just cable run and not something worse (and expensive).

You may have a point. I have recently had my house rewired. Old house project etc..... so if there is a problem the cost will not be mine.

Its a double socket and i have other items plugged in with surge protection extension such as tv, and xbox and they are fine. I find it strange that one lap top has picture problems and the other does not. They both get the problem with the sound though. I have tried the options with the jack lead and it makes no difference so I have ordered a shielded one.

Thanks for raising concern. I will certainly get the man back to check it out to be on the safe side.

Good morning,

I was thinking about the above comment so thought I would try this lap top in the other socket and also without it being plugged in. Still makes the sound which leads me to suspect it could be the jack lead. I've ordered a shielded one so will have to see how I get on. In the mean time if i turn the sound down on my tv when surfing the net it can not be heard. when i'm using media and sound is coming out of my tv it can not be heard so its not that bad.

I'm wondering if the other laptops graphic card might have been struggling. i'll still get the plug checked out though.

While i'm on can anybody recommend any must have plugins?
