Just to clarify.. All of the traffic from the poll itself are from forums like this and Twitter.
The HTPC Blog isn't just about Boxee and XBMC. The posts were solely based on my personal usage at the time of writing. My focus and time available has broadened so I've been testing out different products to write about. I hoped this poll (both the results and the journey) would help me prioritize some things.
You're definitely correct that no one should take this poll seriously in terms of interpreting this as popularity or most users. This was definitely not meant to be market research or crown the "top dog" of media centers. Is it missing info that would be important to other people? Sure! However, for me it fulfills it's purpose.
This poll is basically like of a shoe blogger asking "What brands of shoes do you wear" in Nike, Rebook, Dockers etc forums. To the blogger it just gives them a slight insight on what to write more or less about depending on his goal. To a Dockers forum admin or marketing employee, they might want the results segmented by shoe type, function, etc. This is no doubt useful and better info overall but not 100% necessary for the blogger. So as you said, that's when the company needs to do more detailed market research.
