hmmm - why I am now suspecting that my vote for mediaportal was counted as Plex...
Can someone who has not yet voted first chech the numbers and then compare after voting...

Maybe the poll should have been separated into computer type (ie., MS, Mac, Linux), for a better categorical balance, as not all brands run on all systems. Then, IMO, OS fanatics would be less inclined to flaunt.

I think the main reason Plex has the votes is because they shared the poll on their Twitter and Facebook. A few other "lesser known" media centers retweeted but have less than 10% of the followers.
Unfortunately you just explained very clearly why market researchers give no validity to such polls.
The results are pretty much useless since they are not based on any statistical principles and as you said can be completely skewed by "twits". As 2BitSculptor pointed out, the poll is comparing apples to oranges not only in terms of OS.
It is just a forum sticky post which any one can do, so we should not be expecting anything serious. It is posted on a site that only reports on XBMC and Boxee software. So it is not exactly a valid cross section of users accessing that site.
I voted, mostly for amusement, but I caution everyone not to take the results seriously. If we really want to know about HTPC software, we need to do a professional market research study or at least one created by someone with some market research background.
However, I must applaud the poll author fernando for an intelligent way of attracting more traffic to the HTPCBlog site!

Oh, that reminds me of... someone should start twitter and facebook accounts for MP. I wont since I personaly don't 1) use twitter for anything (even reading) 2) use facebook for anything (don't have an account nor plan to have, I have already enough problems finding free time
