I have to disagree with MR. Sensitive's responce that no other programs should be running on a htpc.

I am looking for a solution where I can have dual monitors and wife can watch the soaps while I surf the web, or watch a dvd while the kids play a video game. etc. Today's machines have more than enough "resourses" to do this. Any reason not to build in this direction is simply called lazy. Apps need to play well together.

The os is called multitasking for a reason, abet not as good as linux but the point is to allow multi users to do multi things at the same time.

I hope the developer community follows this example.

I have currently made kind of a solution towards this approach by using my old sigma designs xcard as an extra video output. If you are not familiar with the xcard, it is a dedicated hardware mpeg2 decoder card which has an awesome output quality, as good or probably better than my VGA->scartRGB solution i am currently using together with my CRT tv.

I have a problem however, the other tv i use for watching the xcard is too old and cannot receive scart-signals, even though it has a scart input!

However, the xcard can only put out video and what i get find on the mp forums mp doesn't support xcard and probably won't in the future either, so i use tvedia on the xcard and mp on my graphics adapter.

I don't know if this might be a solution for you but it's just a suggestion :)

I agree with you that a computer, although faster (and more stable) without additional software, should run whatever the user want's it to run.

I am still very keen on this idea and if anyone else is interested please pm me.. I think MP could kick even more butt if the core is fed a little vitamins for responsiveness (and probably diet pills regarding to RAM )

Btw so that no one misunderstands me; i really LOVE MP, i use it daily and have used it for over 5 months. Wouldn't change it for anything :)

I do understand that other people have other idea's, and i totally respect this..

but, watching a DVD and play a game at the same time?
how about sound issues? you are gonna hava a helluva time setting up dual soundcards, obviously both using 5.1 into separate receivers...

Also, i doubt that current machines can cope with a directx game AND DVD's..simultaniously..

I still like my own approach, a dedicated MP machine, and a laptop that I can take anywhere in the house for surfing.. etc..

no kids old enough to play games yet...

That's true. DX doesn't support two displays (both using acceleration for 3D, MS limitation) and noth Games & MediaPortal would need it.

I'm also a little bit sceptic about how much speed improvements could be archived porting the C# code to C++. I think the most of the performance improvements that can be done to MP is related to MP optimization and not the languages itself. ( and most of the memory usage is caused by skin graphics...)

Also, how many memory leaks it will generate when huge amount of C# code is ported to C++? :)
