I installed media portal 1 a few months ago and have been learning it slowly. I have only set up small sections of my movie and tv series in order to just get the feel for it. Now that I'm ready to fully set everything up, I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on portal 1 vs portal 2. Obviously the amount of plugins and skins, but for anyone who has used both, is there anything specifically media portal 2 is lacking that you think is worth keeping portal 1?

I haven't had time to get into the music and picture sides of portal 1 yet, but I did notice there weren't any plugins related to music for portal 2. I also saw some older posts about amazon prime being supported on portal 2, is that right?

Appreciated any suggestions.

    Hi,

using MP1 for several years now and testing MP2 for about two years now I can say that it depends on your use case which version is suitable for you. If you have a large music collection then MP2.1 currently has some problems which will be sorted out during the next one or two releases.

If you have prepared your video collection (movies, tv series) with a proper folder structure and .nfo files for example with Lehmden's MKV-Buddy tool then MP2 is the easier setup for you. If you have several clients and are willing to have one server machine (which could als o be a client btw.) then MP2 is easier to maintain due to it s dedicated client-server architecture. But I would wait for the next release 2.1.1 with an improved database structure.

Watching TV is about the same on both as the underlying TV Engine is the same piece of software.

Amazon Pirme is supported under MP2 as well as under MP1.

If you have a lot of MP1 Addons then some of them are obsolete with MP2 as there is built in functionality (MOving Pictures, MP-TV Series for example). Others are not available for MP2 right now. You should porbalby make a check list what is important for you and what not and which of them MP1 or MP2 fulfils your needs best.

I have a medium sized (5000 files) MP3 collection which is handled o.k. by MP1 but there are some album sorting problems with MP2 right now (which are in the porcess of being sorted out right now). I have movies and I have TV series which all have their .nfo files and fanart, covers etc. stored locally. In MP2 I do an importer run only with those locally stored meta data and files and I have a 100% recognition rate for MP2. No sorting problems. It is easier as with MP1 as for example MP-TV Series will not support meta data in .nfo files which MP2 and Kodi do.

I hope this helps a little bit.

    Cheers

This sounds as if the current database structure wasn't good ;) - I guess that's not the message you wanted to give :). For the sake of avoiding misunderstandings: the current database - and it might be important to stress that there is only one single central media database compared to MP1 where each plugin is bringing its own - already contains a lot of information. More might be added as part of some restructuring. Notwithstanding the current version has no isues.

Also: No changes to the database will take place in the upcoming version 2.1.1.

there are some album sorting problems with MP2 right now
Have you reported them? If yes, where? I would like to verify if this is already addressed.

Sorry, did not want to sound that way. Lack of native English speaking here. Of course MP2 is fully useable from the database point of view.

Misinterpretation of postings from my side then. What I got from the discussions was, that there are some database improvements in the works for speed and also for data relations? Maybe not for 2.1.1 but for the release after that? Little do I know.

Others had already reported this so I did not bother due to my limited time. Maintaining a mixed infrastructure with MP1 and MP2 at home focused mainly on MP1 while feeding some small doses of MP2 to wife and kids takes up too much time.

I apologize if my posting gave a pessimistic impression. I just try to have an unbiased view on things from a common user's point of view.

    That's correct.

    Exactly :)

OK, but I am not sure what exactly you were referring to. IMHO there is no issue left with the current importer. If sorting issues persist then I would be very curious to see the examples. So if you referenced a thread I could take a look at my side if things still apply or were fixed (and when).

I apologize if my posting gave a pessimistic impression.
No need to. I just tried to clarify what could possibly be misunderstood.
