Possible channel change speed improvement (1 Viewer)

Here's a chance observation that may lead the experts to a way to speed channel changes in our MP. I scarcely understand what is going on myself as you will probably conclude.:)

In an attempt to add a second tuner ( a Leadtek Winfast DTV1000 S card), (which was not listed in my capture card definitions.xml file) I attempted to add the info. to my file. It did not seem to work when I did Configuration\TV\Capture cards\Add.

As the file already worked with my existing DTV1000 T card, I left the file with the faulty definition, intending to check that part of it later.

When I tried to get TV on MP I received the message "Failed to start TV..... definitions do not contain filters". I assume that was because I'd messed up the file previously.

However, although there was no TV picture, the selected channel and program info. below the little screen was there and scrolling as usual. I also noticed that other channel changes now happened " instantly " along with their scrolling program info. If that info. can appear so quickly (and I gather it is part of the broadcast data) then perhaps the video can too.

Please let me know if I am nominated for a Nobel prize for services to MP:D

    Nope

My channel changes are sub 1 second on dvb-t, until your post had not given the improvement a thought.

    Cheers for pointing this out.

Yeah you get it for finding out by accident that MP itself IS quick. The filters (read codecs) just need time to render the content - that's the main part of the delay...

Para & rtv you are a couple of spoil sports ;)

My changes take about 5 seconds before the picture appears with my Leadtek DTV1000T so I must be unlucky.

I was not concerned because I read elsewhere that ch. changes should be expected to be slower with MP compared to the vendor software because MP is not dedicated to any particular card.

I note that the definitions file is quite lengthy. Does moving the part for your card to the top of the list, or removing unused definitions help?

What the other guys are saying is that it's slow for you because the filters (codecs) that your TV card manufacturer has supplied are slow.

The reason the manufacturers software is usually faster is because they don't use the filters that MediaPortal (and MCE and most others) do.

    Hope that helps,

    Cheers,

Nope, those XML files are loaded completely before they are processed. And even without 2x2Ghz grabbing the info out of that file would be faster as you are able to wink ;)
