It is not that bad at handling large repositories (though, of course, accessing a lot of Music files over a network can be slow sometimes) and work is being done in improving the speed of the Music Database at the moment, or at least it was being mentioned in a few threads. If you have a couple thousand files on a wired network it should be fine.
