I just installed version 1.15. My tuner is a hauppauge 955q usb. Using the wintv8 software, I can tune all my ota channels. I'm trying to set up media portal to use with kodi as front end. When I scan for channels in MP, it finds them but won't let me preview them saying unknown error. When I open up MP, and try to turn on tv, the light blinks briefly, then nothing. Also, if I try to look at the channels, it asks me to specify the ip address or host name, then says I'm conected to tv server, unable to connect to database. I have the schedules direct plug in installed. I'm a recent cord cutter so pretty new to this but fairly computer savvy. I really don't want to buy a tivo, let's see what we can do.

    Hello and welcome :)

...but won't let me preview them saying unknown error.
This is the most tricky of the issues you've reported.

Before I say anything more, please be aware that preview is not a bullet-proof reliable way to test channels. Feel free to continue to try it, but don't panic if video doesn't show or audio doesn't show. Such problems are caused by codec configuration issues and are not indicators of serious problems.

I'd sooner recommend that you avoid preview and use MediaPortal instead, but either way:
    1. Ensure you've installed the LAV codecs unless you've got good reason not to do so (ie. you're familiar with DirectShow and codecs). MediaPortal's installer gave you the option to install them. If you missed or chose not to take up the offer at the time, you can still get them by using the MediaPortal Extension Installer to install the "LAVFilters" extension.
    2. Configure MediaPortal's codec settings. These can be found in MediaPortal Configuration -> codecs and renderer section. A good starting configuration is to select the LAV option for all settings except the audio renderer setting, and for audio renderer select the default DirectSound option (ie. Windows' default audio output device). Please make sure you do this on all tabs in that section. :)

Coming to the unknown error now...
What you're seeing is abnormal and not something I've seen before. Based on all the information you've provided, I suspect the cause may be network related.

    Please:
    1. Try rebooting the PC. I know it's clichéd, but in this case there's really a good chance it may help.
    2. Do you have any network security software (anti-virus, firewall etc.) installed on your system? If yes, make sure it's configured to allow MediaPortal, MediaPortal Configuration, MediaPortal's TV Server (TVService) and TV Server Configuration to use your network. Communication from MP => TV Server, MP Config => TV Server, TV Server Config => TV Server, and KODI => TV Server all relies on networking, even when MP, KODI and TV Server are all installed on the same PC.
    3. Finally, if the above 2 tips don't help, try disabling Windows 10's IPv6 network protocol: http://www.techunboxed.com/2014/10/how-to-disable-ipv6-in-windows-10.html

When I open up MP, and try to turn on tv, the light blinks briefly, then nothing.
You need to select a channel before you can turn TV on. Instead of selecting the "TV On" button select the "channels" button. You should then see a list of channels pop up in new dialog. Select a channel from that list and if everything else were working correctly (currently not the case), TV would start.

Also, if I try to look at the channels, it asks me to specify the ip address or host name, then says I'm conected to tv server, unable to connect to database.
This appears to be caused by your earlier attempt to use MediaPortal 2. The Windows application event log shows that MP2 wasn't removed cleanly:
    "8/9/2016 7:34:42 PM";"MsiInstaller";"(0)";"Information";"Product: MediaPortal 2 -- Removal failed.";"11725"

    To fix:
    1. Close MediaPortal and MediaPortal Configuration.
    2. Open Windows File Explorer.
    3. Copy and paste c:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal TV Server into the address/location bar up the top.
    4. Copy (ctrl + c) the gentle.config file within that folder.
    5. Navigate up one level to c:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal, then down into the MediaPortal sub-folder.
    6. Paste (ctrl + v) the gentle.config file.

    Kind regards,
    mm

Man, thanks a bunch, very helpful. Seems most of my problems were due to mediaportal 2 not uninstalling correctly. Got everything set up on the front end with kodi as well. Love it so far, thanks again for your help.
