Thanks a lot for the tips. I forgot to mention but I bumped up the bitrate the moment I installed MP and also fiddled with the GraphEdit and the registry. Unfortunately both resulted in not much improvement.
Also my STB does not support S-Video out over the scart - it only has CVBS (composite) and RGB, which PVR-150 does not seem to process correctly.
So what I did was remove everything by Hauppauge with their tool, then install clean drivers, used the Tweak Tool to set sharpness to 7 and the temporal filter to 0 as well as for both capture and encoder the "ECP Video" bitrate to 14000, peak at 18000, GOP 12 (for PAL), P Spacing to 1. I then used GraphEdit to confirm the values (they don't always save) - the capture is under "Video Capture Sources" and the encoder is under "WDM Streaming Multiplexer Devices". In MP I have "Use quality control" for my card checked with default set to "High". High is VBR 12000/16000 and LiveTV is 14000/18000. I checked "Disable Dynamic Noise Reduction".
Unfortunately these resulted in rather negligible quality improvement.
So at the end I am stuck with ffdshow and the unsharp mask filter (max strength of 127) - with it the picture is a lot crisper.

I think adjusting the TV-Out is quite easy. I use a two step process.
This way I get a very good match between both desktop color and tuner colors on my TV.

I think adjusting the TV-Out is quite easy. I use a two step process.
- You need to make sure first that the normal desktop colors look good on the TV. Set the image below as wallpaper and adjust the color settings (mainly contrast and saturation) in your video card's control panel so that you see equally good the dark and the light areas of the spectrum. If you have an ATI card set the Desktop and Fullscreen 3D sections to the same values.
Ideally you should clearly see each color square (the top right-most one - white - should be distinguishable from the one left to it).
Ideally you should see the lines from the left-most pattern (bottom-left) clearly. In any case you should see the second pattern well.
- The next step is to use another PC's TV out to beam the same image to your tuner (again set it as wallpaper on the source PC and ideally set the resolution to 720x576 for PAL or 720x480 for NTSC). Then fiddle with the codec color controls. I don't know about how NVidia's control panel works in this situation, but if you have an ATI card do not touch its control center - only adjust the codec.
Same thing with the patterns - ideally you should see the first one (I don't). In any case you should see the second one (at least the vertical lines).
This way I get a very good match between both desktop color and tuner colors on my TV.
