Question about multiple tuners and multiple clients (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I've got a quick question about how MediaPortal handles multiple TV tuners and multiple clients.

Say my TV Server has 4 digital TV tuners in it (T1, T2, T3 and T4), all picking up the same channels.

I have 3 computers connected to it running MediaPortal (C1, C2 and C3)

Say C1 is watching TV on Channel 1, and they have also instructed the server to record something at the same time on Channel 2. This will use two tuners right?

Then C2 comes along and watches something on Channel 3 while recording on Channel 4, this will mean all 4 tuners are in use right?♠

So what happens if:

- C3 then comes along and tries to watch Channel 5 - will it kick someone else off the TV, stop a recording or just say that there are no tuners available?
- C3 starts watching one of the channels that are already in use (either being watched live or recorded), will the server send the one stream off to two computers at once or will it say there are no tuners free?

Thanks :)

    Hi,
I have that kind of setup in my server box.

Your assumtion is correct given that each recording and viewing is taking place on a different transponder.
You will then get the message that no free tuner is available.
though I have never had that in my setup...

If c3 watches a channel that is already being watched by a different client, this is no problem, for c3 gets to view the timeshift of the other client, actually....

    cheers

    Great, thanks :)

Just one question (I searched but couldn't find the answer), what is a transponder?

Hmm well, I need to say that my statement is only applying to DigitalTV (DVB-C/-S/-T). There a transponder is actually a frequency where multiple channels are transmitted on. In the "old" analog TV; one channel has one frequency, in digital multiple channels can be on one transponder and also viewed/recorded in parallel (at least with MP)

Well technically the explanation is not really correct, but I think it's quite easy to understand, right?

    cheers
