    Hi guys!

As we in Holland say, I cant see the trees through the woods anymore, so many graphics cards that are on the market these days.

Ok, my problem. I have a pretty good working system based on a Duo Core E6600 on a Abit Fatality i90HD, This motherboard has a built in graphics processor the Radeon X1250, with the very convenient HDMI output port on it which I use to connect my JVC LCD 32 Inch, I watch on 720P. Beside that I have the Digital everywhere FloppyDTV-C/CI I use to watch Digital TV, also some HD channels like National Geographic HD.

The standard digital channels work pretty well, pretty smooth no dropped frames. but with the HD channels I allways have a little stutter now and then.

I have been tweaking for months now, but cant get it any better, however the upgrades of the drivers and Mediaportal really have improved the TV experienze somewhat. But by now I have the feeling that the graphics card is the bottles neck here. Why? The graphics card has not its own GDDR memory, it uses 256Mb of the PC's DDR, Also the graphics card is not able to use hardware accelleration properly (it can, but the result is worse without..duh?!), so it uses the PC's processor's power to do so.. So when the PC is doing something in the background it shows in the HDTV performance, more dropped frames, more stutter. As I said, I have been tweaking for months now, and it doesnt get any better at this point.

So what I hope is that with installing a good graphics card, the TV experience wil improve a lot by smoothening the picture, no stutter and no dropped frames when watching National geographic.. I am sure the Floppy DTV is not the culprit, because in windowed mode, when the picture is a lot smaller, the picture IS smooth, so the tuning and receiving signal MUST BE OK.

I think about a heat piped Radeon HD 3870, but the specs say that it needs a PCI express 2.0 x16 slot, the Fatality i89HD has a PCI express x16 1.0a, does this matter?

Is the HD 3870 not overkill, I do not play any games, it is pure for watching TV and HD movies (Blue ray), but I want that in the best possible quality

Also are there other graphcis cards that can put out HDMI, have direct X10 and hardware accelleration that work nicely on my motherboard?

If anyone here had a good experience from going over from a onboard X1200 or X1250 to something else, please let me know.

    Thanks in advance,

Thanks, I think you are right! The HD4650 and 4670 are new mainstream cards for under $100 that perform very well, low power consumption and quiet allso.

Beside HIS there are other manufacturers with the HD 4670 GPU that are cheaper, the Zallman heatpipe technology makes the HIS cards quite expensive compared to others.

Thanks again for pointing me to that website, I will now focus on the HD 46xx, i think that will be the best choice for me.

    To finish this thread,

I have bought a cheap Gainward HD4650 with 1024 DDR2 and a HDMI, DVI and VGA on board.. I know, noise wise not the best choice, BUT because I am using it for watching TV and movies, the fan, which is the noisy part, is turned off most of the time.. some times it runs for a minute or so, and then it is quiet for hours again.. So for me this IS a quiet solution.. For people who are also using their HTPC for playing games at high frame rates, I would not buy this one, and invest a little more in a passive cooled version like the HIS mentioned above.

The result of this upgrade is brilliant, especially with fast paced movies and TV it shows.. I never liked watching formula1 racing because it was so blured due to the fast moving images.. you could see the graphics card (x1250) could not keep up with the images, so it dropped one here and there. Same with HD TV like History channel and National Geographic HD, all runs smooth now.

I have allso tried 1080i output (max of my HD ready TV) and now shows a brilliant picture as well, with the X1250 this was worse then 720P, but now I cant see any difference.. Therefore I have it on 720P now, so I allso still can read the characters when turning to internet or something.

And all for just 71 Euros including shipping!
