i'm totally with you jawbroken - i've spent SO long getting my music collection just the way i like it that i don't want ANY program except foobar messing with my tags!!! :p

there might be middle ground though - for instance, how about having just the song filepaths and ratings duplicated in a seperate xml file? then if your music db was corrupted, or the music db format changed, mp could read this information back in after a music import.
or, you could tag your files with a "RATING" tag in a seperate program dedicated to music tagging, and mp could just read this info back on music import...

Why not give the option of writing to the ID3 tags as well? Those who do not trust MP with their files keep it turned off, those who say: Well MP is great in all other areas, why should it break my mp3s can turn it on?

The one issue that I have with all commercial code is the in-compatability that forces you to stay with a program if you have loads of data in it. I strongly believe that open source should use all available standard formats. I would not want to loose all my music info gathered in MP (this should include album gfx) if at some point in time I would decide to switch to "xyz".

Yes, but I don't think any standard tagging system exists for things like rating, last time played, number of times played, etc. That is why I was saying it is probably best to keep such application specific stuff in the database. The album art embedding is standardised, so that is a different matter.

Perhaps I am wrong and there is a standard tagging system out there with such fields?

There's a rating tag that some MP3 taggers use (The Godfather...). I'd love MP to use it.

In fact all programs should use it :) This way I don't need to synchronize my ratings between every mediaplayer in the planet.
