What would be the best option for a 4x 1TB HDD in Raid 5 setup (via HighPoint RocketRAID 2320) for use with Media Portal?
I want to keep the server "on" all the time (want it to become active when needed without draining full power all the time)

Windows Home Server or Windows XP?

Any setup/install suggestions would be very helpfull! (especially on the best way to get the server to go into/out of a standbymode)

In Windows Homes Server you don't have to worry about RAID. WHS combines all the disk space to a single pool and you can select which shares you want duplicated. Of course you need more than one physical drive in the server to be able to benefit from this.

WHS is not supported by MediaPortal, because WHS lacks "some critical hotfixes". I'm using WHS for the tv server and I haven't had any issues, apart from a popup telling me this when starting the tv server configuration tool. I think it's a pity MediaPortal doesn't support WHS, it's a great combination!

My server is on all the time and I've heard it's hard to get WHS into standby, because it continuously keeps balancing the data. So if standby is what you're after, you're probably better off with XP.

Well, I would say its a pity that Microsoft doesnt give us all updates on server OS :)

    Thanks for the reply,
I recently finished my rebuild. I used my 500GB WD GP drive for OS (Windows XP Pro), and added my FireDTV-C card and TV Server.
Have 4 1TB HDD's via RocketRAID card running in 2 sections of 1,5 TB... (Grrr that Windows 2TB limit)
Works great and its nice to know my data is safe!
