Recommended TV Tuner Cards (1 Viewer)

Hi Guys,

I've been using MS Windows Media Center for a while now, and would like to try something better. I've been burnt buying the wrong tv tuner before, so would like to start off on the right foot this time.

I took a look at the recommended hardware section on the wbsite at MEDIAPORTAL - free media center - Recommended HW but only found one card - and the review was back in 2006.

I was wondering if there are any newer recommended cards now that work with media portal, or should I still try and source the FlyTV Express X1 MST T2A2M?

Personally I would like to have a card with two tuners and be able to record off analogue and digital. (Preferrably with the option to record 2xDigital simultaneously or 1xDigital and 1xAnalog simultaneously).

I'm not needing to record high def at this point in time.

So - I was just wondering, are their any cards that work better with media portal, or what should I consider?

While I'm at it, is there any recommended remote control hardware that is also recommended?

Thanks & Regards

Adam.

according to Infinityloop, MP now works with 'any' properly installed tuner card except for those that use CI and diseqC

    see:

If you want 2 tuners and dont want to fork out for an dual tuner card, (and have a pci slot or usb port free), MP will work with a second tuner card. I have two hybrids in my machine (1 analog/digital + 1 analog/digital) and it works great :)

    Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I have installed a DVICO Dual TV Tuner, and it appears to be working. However I am having a few problems with it.

    a) Everytime I try to use the analog cards the whole thing crashes. I can only seem to get digital to work.

    b) The remote control I have doesn't appear to work correctly. Some buttons work (like channel up and down and numbers) but most don't. (Such as Play, FF, Pause, Live TV, DVD Menu, etc). I'm not sure how to go about fixing this. I looked in the Remove setup, but no remotes there match mine. Should I be purchasing a new one, and if so what hardware is compatible?

    c) I've tried setting up a manual record of a TV series, but it lists the recording as MANUAL. I can't find where to change the name or give the program a title. Can someone please help point me in the right direction?

    Thanks & Regards

    Adam.

    a) have a squizz at yr logs and see what they say are causing the crashes.

    b) it would help if you stated what model card the remote is for

    c) as far as I know there isnt, but I would love to see an answer to that question that contradicts this - anyone? :)

Hi, and thanks for your reply and help...

    a) Logs show the following:

    b) Sorry - of course. My card is the "FusionHDTV Express Dual DVB-T Express" (with remote control).

    c) OK, thanks for that. How then do media portal users differenciate between which shows they record if you can't give the show a name?

    d) An additional question: How can I disable the media portal TV server / service. (I would like to continue to use Windows Media Center until I've got Media Portal working correctly).

    Thanks again for your help!

I use a couple of K-World DVB-S 100 PCI cards connected to two different birds, and a Fusion HDTV Dual (Twin DVB-T), all work perfectly with MP.

With regard to remotes, I use an MCE Remote, but you can map just about anything, so use whatever remote you prefer.

    Hello all.

Does MadiaPortal support Avermedia's Duet A188? This I just bought from Newegg and it's slated to come in on Monday, June 22. Further, is there an XP 64 SP2 bit version of MediaPortal? The Duet comes with drivers that support XP 64.

    Thx, Sylva.

    A) Forum/How_to_post_logs - MediaPortal Manual Documentation

    B) regarding the remote, if you cant get it mapped using MP, have a look at eventghost, girder, HIP or winlirc as options for doing the mapping.

This may help as a starting point
    https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/...-fusionhdtv-remote-correctly-2262/index2.html

Alternately, you can currently pick up an imon remote and IR receiver on Ebay for $5US - these work great with MP. have excellent range and a good button layout. (this is really cheap! they normally retail for $30)
IMON REMOTE CONTROL MCE IR - eBay (item 280352796282 end time Jun-30-09 21:49:20 PDT)

If you go the imon route, get back to me and I will send you my .imo file for MP

    C) I would love to know the answer to this question too :) I never quite figured out why, when all the information is in the TV guide, MP doesnt pick it up and use it to name the show to something more useful than "manual" - anyone?

    D) I will look into it and get back to you.

I've heard that some people have gotten it working in XP. I'm using the Duet on Windows 7, and MP TV Server doesn't even recognize that the card is installed in the system. Hopefully someone will come up with a fix - in the meantime, I'm using WMC for tv recordings and dumping the files into a folder that MP monitors. I just can't do live TV.

My, Dagaetch, this doesn't sound too good, does it. As people buy more of the card ratings are going down. Maybe I jumped too early in the fray. Maybe Vista View would have been better. But then again, that's more money. Tomorrow I'll take to the card. It'll be my first TV card so I am expecting a few surprises. Besides MediaPortal I also have GB-PVR and am preparing to download XBMC. I'd very much like to run the card with my Ubuntu Server 64, but there are no Linux drivers for this card so far, though it has now been out there for awhile. Interesting that Win 7 doesn't recognize the card , while most of reviewers at Newegg say that in general it was recognized automatically.

Thanks for telling of your experience. Sylva.
