Recording Engine as a service (1 Viewer)

I agree that a service based recording system would be desirable. I use a v-stream xpert dvb-t pci card. The software that comes with it is not very friendly for setting up recording. The EPG doesn't work, and set-up of the recording requires knowledge of the channel numbers which cannot be reassigned to anything memorable by the user. MP is a vast improvement - even my wife will be able to use it.

However, one advantage that the v-stream software has over MP is that once set up it will start recording even if the front-end program isn't running. It even brings the PC out of hibernate mode to record, and then drops it back into it again when its finished. I don't keep my PC on 24/7 and running MP all the time the pc is in use would just be a waste of resources.

I don't know how specific to my card the recording module is, but it seems to me that it would almost be trivial to use MP as the front end to set the data up for the v-stream recording module to use.

PVR Scheduler already does all this - and more.

Once PVR Scheduler is configured, you can select the program/s to record from the EPG in MediaPortal, then Hibernate or Standby your PC and it will then wakeup, record, and go back to hibernate - all automagically!

I realise this is dredging up and old topic but has any more thought been put into this ?

Ive used both MP and GBPVR and as others have said although GBPVR has a service to start (albeit just the once) its recording of TV is simply superb.

However MP has so much more to offer IMO and having the recording being a service sounds like just the ticket.

I have paid for PVRScheduler but not had the chance to set it up properly yet. Besides I dont think the issue is being able to wake from hibernation but to record when the pc is being used for things other than HTPC, which for a lot of people I would imagine it is.

Just my two pence worth :)

After moving to gb-pvr for the fact that it records to mpg insteed of that dvr-ms. I to am loving the recording service.
My vote is it's a must have feature and i really don't see how it would scare off a noobie.

I do miss MP and am just waiting for the Built-in mpg engine, but when it happens PLEASE make it a service.

Thanks to everyone working on MP!!!

I've had to leave MP due to similar issues as well.

I've been using Beyond TV now for a couple months and I didn't really realize how much of a pain MP was *NOT* to have it's recording engine as a service.

I'll definately be keeping an eye on MP but until it becomes more stable, moves it's recording engine to a service, and has a proper compression routine that works/doesn't crash, I can't go back to a program that causes me more grief then good.

Yepp! A recording service would be very very nice!
I hope it can be done...

I'm not very much into the technicalities of it all – maybe a service is the best solution…
However I would like to bring up another side of the issue for discussion.
I can sense hesitation from the devs as soon as any feature or bug comes up that concerns the ability to use the computer for anything else than running MP 24/7. I agree that this should be the ultimate goal for a media centre but advanced users will want to use other software until MP can offer everything related to media playback as good as, or better than specialised software such as WMP, Itunes, Photoshop Album, VNC-player, Zoom player…you name it.
Since I suppose most users of MP today are advanced, computer literate users, there will be a large user base wanting to switch between MP and other software.
Maybe this does not go very well with the long term plan of MP but I think that putting some effort into making it easier to use the computer for other things than running MP all the time would result in more happy users until the software has reached it’s ultimate goal.
One very nice step in this direction was the ability to minimize MP on exit. This prevents accidental shutdowns that cause you to lose recordings. However this feature has had serious bugs since introduced and no-one seems to be trying to fix it.

I don’t in any way intend this post to be negative towards the devs. It’s their project and they make their priorities. I just want to put some light on what I think is the biggest problem with the software today.
