recording TV (1 Viewer)

im running MP in windows XP, not as a dedicated PC but just as another windows utility program

i have tried recording a couple of TV shows using the EPG system to select the shows and the timing

FIRST: media portal did do the recording but.. it generates a file type i have never heard of.. can it make MPG files?

SECOND: it "hung" when i set a timed recording and would not return to a working menu by any "button" i tried

i had to use Windows Task manager to kill mediaportal off

THIRD: i presume MP cannot record and show a full screen TV program at the same time? as the screen goes grey.. should this happen????

otherwise it runs just fine... if a bid wierd as the using a mouse as control the menus "slip and slide" all over (fine if you use keyboard control)

any ideas?
any solutions?
