Synopsis::

I just purchased a brand new Serial IR Receiver (http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/449635c608b61a462741c0a87f9906f5/Product/View/XH6457) to use with my home-built semi-HTPC. Now bear with me guys as I have NO knowledge about ANYTHING to do with Infrared...

So I installed the drivers of the CD that came with it, plugged it into COM1, set the drivers to COM1 then downloaded WinLIRC because I had heard good things about it and thought it could let me use the remote to control my PC. I opened up the main WinLIRC program and was greeted by an error message, instructing me to check the config file so I did. I left everything normal except for the COM port (COM1) and directing a path to the config file. I then clicked OK and was greeted by the SAME error message. At this point I got a bit frustrated and went back to the config and pressed 'Learn' (first button I saw) and was greeted with ANOTHER error! This one read "There was an error initilizing WinLIRC. Please check port settings and try again."

WTF? Can anyone help me?

You probably haven't got any replies because your request is confusing... :?

The link you posted doesn't point to anything that looks like an IR Receiver...

And it sounds like the problem you have is to do with WinLIRC, rather than MediaPortal - is that correct?

What type of IR remote are you trying to configure with Mediaportal?

Sorry about the confusing reqeust lol... Not used to typing into a MediaPortal Support prog.

Heres the link to the ACTUAL receiver http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4497967a0d1aa9cc273fc0a87f990775/Product/View/XH6457
Seems like its made for communicating with cellphones but I didn't think that would matter

Yeah it sort of is to do with WinLIRC, but it might be to do with the receiver... Since this is hardware support forums and it is hardware and it can be used with mediaportal i thought it should be ok?

And the remote im using is one that came with my TV card... Does it matter which remote I use? I thought I could use any then configure it...

IrDA has a slightly different wavelength than IR remotes. You will hardly get it working, if you get something working with that as all. Sorry, for the bad news, that's something for the trash, I'm afraid.

Then you should already have a suitable IR receiver as well (that also came with your TV card) - is that correct?

Yes, it sure does....what one do you have that you are trying to make work with MediaPortal?

To answer your first question, no. Not a suitable one. I got some random crappy one that connects directly to the TV card through what looks like a headphone plug, although I think its 2.5mm...

It does matter? I'm just using the one that came with my card... My card (going to replace with a PVR150MCE...) is a cheapo Pixelview PlayTV Pro 2...

My recommendation is that you forget about trying to make what you have got work, and go buy a MCE remote (the so called "European" one with the 4 colored teletext buttons) - it will probably cost about NZ$80 - and it includes a receiver and "blasters", and it works "straight out of the box" with MediaPortal..... :D

$80? Aah but how wrong you are :D Here it is for $60! http://www.tastech.co.nz/details/518.htm

I think I might get that... It looks better and MAYBE if I want I could also get the remote keyboard as well...

But does it work with WinLIRC? I want to make it so I can use the remote to control the mouse and other applications as well as mediaportal... Could I do that with this one?
