Hi everybody,

my HTPC is working nearly perfect now ;) . The only thing which nerves is the noise of the Intel boxed fan but the other fans (PSU & case) are really quiet.

I tried to find it out by myself but i could not find an answer which satisfied me. My favorite in the moment is the Arctic Freezer Pro 7.

Which cooler for LGA 775 would you recommend ? Is there a possibility to use a passive heatpipe instead of a fan cooler ? My Intel C2D 2160 is not overclocked.

Have a look at Scythe Ninja or Mini Ninja. I use the Mini and it works very well as a fanless cooler. I use it with a C2D E6600 with no problem at all.

I also use The Intel boxed fan on my E4300, the copper core larger heatsink variant, and don't find it loud at all. Used with a motherboard with working fan speed control in the bios it is actually quieter than the hard drive seek sounds of my already quiet Samsung F1. It rarely even spins above 1100rpm with my setup as well. In fact the default C2D Intel fan is in the top 5 heatsinks rated for noise on Frostytech, a site I trust.

If absolute silence is needed go for some passive choices already mentioned hare, the Ninja Mini being a solid one.

The 2 FANs are optional. You don't get them in the base package and have to buy them separately yourself (if you want/need them).

Its been a while since I did temp testing, but if I remember correctly the CPU temp is normally around 40-45°C. It is generally only warm to touch. I would need to run a prime test again to get the full load value, but I did run prime for over an hour when I setup my HTPC and the temps were all good. I suppose it depends on the air flow in the case.

    Here is a review.

I think my load temp was lower than that.

I undervolt my CPU (E6420 with core @ v1.1) which helps bring down the temp and the power use too ;)

    Hello Guys,

i decided to choose the Ninja and i must say... . My CPU temperature does not increase above 20-25 degrees, even when i run Mediaportal with viewing a MPEG-TS stream for ~ 1 hour !

Thanks again to Petsa and James for the tips !

I have attached 2 pictures from my HTPC how it looks like now. Compared to the low CPU temperature, the system temperature is between 35 and 40 degrees on load where i don't think that it is critical. Nevertheless i'm still experimenting with the airflow.

In the moment the red Xilence fan is running at 7V because of noise reduction but there's no difference from temperature side if it runs at 12V. The Xilence blows the air out of the case. The black one is the Scythe fan which is not really neccessary but blows inside the case onto the cooler noiseless with ~ 700 RPM.

Perhaps somebody has an additional tip ???

I've got a very similar set-up - also using the LC17 case, with a scythe Minja on a Xeon 3110 overclocked to 3.6 GHz. I replaced the rear case fans with Nexus silent fans and hung a 120 mm Nexus fan on the right hand side of the Minja so it's sucking cold air in through the side vent. I suspect this is all overkill, but my system's nice and quiet.
