Would it be possible to make the volume OSD appear whenever used (not only in fullscreen TV og movies), but when using radio, music or even when not playing anything? Also: A "Mute" OSD that would show whenever mute is enabled.

That would be really great, and I think its quite strange that mediaportal doesn't show this. Now it's hard to tell when ive reached maximum volume, or if the sound is muted.
Oh, all right, the current Volume OSD is then a part of the Fullscreen TV / Movie screen? Well then you are right it is not all there. I thought it was an own seperate small overlay window that was turned on.All required things are there? Well, in that case it already would have been implemented, I guess. I doubt it's a problem of dev's laziness or short-sights.
Just enjoyed someone saying out load what I was just thinking subcounsously...
This was requested several times before (see "Similar Threads" on bottom of this page) but nothing really happend. One has to wonder: Why? Is it impossible to do?
I believe that a lot of the messaging and UI stuff is being rewritten/updated at the moment. I think it is not easy to implement this simply at the moment, and since the messaging and UI is in flux it is probably not worth fixing at the moment as it is only an aesthetic issue.
I think one of the regulars here said he was working on it a couple of weeks ago,I can't remember the name.

Yep, I have a prototype working, but it's far from perfect at the moment. Real life got in the way and development stalled.
What I've made is closer to a workaround, so devs might not like it (with good reasons
). Will see if I can do the right thing this weekend.
