Hey guys,

I'm moving into a new flat in a week or so, in a build up to this I have been building a Media Pc based on my old pc (64bit 3200+, 1gig Ram, XFX5200 Passive or xfx6800 air cooled) but anyway.

I was building it up and transfering stuff from my main pc via a striaght connection and it was a gigabit, and It was SUPER fast.

So now im thinking about getting a gigabit router to run with a 20mb cable net connection but I can't seem to find any good ones.

Wi-fi is an added bonus incase there is ever a laptop in the flat.

to summarise:

Will having a gigabit make a real difference to streaming video/music over the network.

if so whats a good option?

Thanks guys

If it is only for streaming, 100mbit should be plenty. If you may want to copy over large files once in a while - like copying DVD images, then Gigabit saves you a lot of time.

I am unsure about the current prices, but I guess gigabit equipment is more costly than 100mbit equipment. So you could ask yourself if this extra cost is worth the few times you will really benefit from it or not.

PS. Maybe you could consider Sneakernet as a valid alternative. Don't underestimate the bandwidth of an external harddrive being carried around.

Nice link, but I really don't wanna be carrying around/updating a HD, plus it would need to be a 750gig, false economy?

I'm looking at spending around £80, there are plenty around I just cant find any/good reviews

Round up of some of the latest routers here

If your not really bothered about wireless, you could pick up a cheaper router with 100mbit hub integrated and just buy a separate gigabit switch.

From what i've read around some of the newer routers with gigabit integrated is they are not worth the extra costs for the pre-n wireless that come with them. I'm just using my old netgear router with a separate gigabit switch (cost about £20 for the switch)

That link is really good thanks, although it does focus on the Wi-Fi and not the wired side of things, or the ability to handle multiple connections like Bit torrent
