Before I go to the length of documenting my exact setup, may I enquire as to whether an older board (KT V333) could be expected to support S3 standby properly? I've managed to get it to go to sleep nicely (from my mce remote control), but the only way I can wake the machine up is with the power switch on the front of the machine. If I enable any devices as wake up devices in power management options in control panel, then the machine simply won't go into standby.

Any help appreciated, or even just someone saying "no it'll never work dude". At least then I will know once and for all. Also if it won't work, what kind of motherboard do I need to make it work?

Does the receiver blink when you press the remote whilst in standby, this tells you if +5vstb is available at the usb port (older boards only usb ports 0 and 1 have power).

If you have above working, try using the MST standby tool

Great thanks for the help. I installed the MST tool last night but unfortunately now mediaportal is running very sluggish (ie not even usable) so now I have to figure out why whats happening before i can figure the standby issue. :(

But I have noticed the receiver doesnt blink. I will try different usb ports tho. Would I have to specfically enable the remote control as a device that can bring the machine out of standby in the control panel?

That confirms you have no +5vstb at that usb port, if all are the same, you may need to move a jumper on the motherboard to enable the +5vstb, thats even if your power supply supports it, also in the BIOS helps if you enable usb keyboard support.

If you give me the full make\model of motherboard\PSU i'll try and find out for you if this is workable.

Hey thanks for all the help with this, on closer inspection I noticed a jumper on the motherboard and realised that in fact the front usb connectors supported the 5v stby signal, so plugged the mce receiver into one of those and hey presto, now it goes in and out of standby with the power button on the remote.

    Awesome!
