(=optical/digital TOS-link   (SPDIF) )  Now, you can send the undecoded audio signal through the SPDIF cable where the receiver can decode it. The computer doesnt touch the audio stream what so ever. It just passes it through to your receiver/TV. This is the "Use SPDIF Passthrough" option. This also means volume controle is out of the question via the computer. You can imagine the audio being transmitted as is (lossless) to the receiver being of a higher quality. But to be fair, I doubt anyone is capable of hearing the difference.
