Hi guys

Not sure if this is the right thread but Im having an issue with samba shares.

I have a linux file server running ubuntu 8.10 set up sharing all of my media. The media pc running vista accesses everything over the network. Tv shows are on one hard drive, Movies are on another. When accessing the movies folder it takes ridiculously long to load the content of the folder and then another 30 seconds or so before starting your selected movie. This is not an issue whne browsing or starting tv shows. Both are set up to share the same way and browsing movies from another Pc does not have the same lag.

Is there a better way to share files from a file server?

I have the same issue with my music folder. I also have ubuntu 8.10 with samba and Vista with mediaportal. Loading the Music-directory takes very long. It seems like it is due to the long list of subdirectories.

I take it you have used the database scan function for music\movies, now change your view inside the relevant GUI, this should speed things up and use the database rather than rescanning the entire folder each time you enter.

I don't know what the database scan function is, but do you mean I should change view from "list" to something else? If it helps I used this guide to set up Mediaportal.
MediaPortal Install Guide - AVS Forum

After that I connected my samba share as a network drive in Vista and added the network drive to my music in mediaportal configuration.

MP config\database, update database from selected shares button.

Then use the "switch view" button in the running MP's GUI within the music section to artist\album rather than shares, now it will use the database rather than the shares information.

    Thanks for the help PD.

The database really sped things up. All I have to do now is to edit the id-tags on all of my files. That's what you get for being sloppy when ripping.
