I've been looking around to see if this could be done somehow with MP. It seems like an automatic - since this is a "Mediaportal". Certainly a MP mobile client or web interface could get this done - no?

Granted I don't have much of a music collection to serve. However, this is in the process of changing. Significant other is now living with me and between to two of us there are now hundreds of CD's. I'd like to rip them all and have them on a centralized sever that can serve them (at least in my local LAN) to mobile devices (Android, iPad, iPhone). Also, would like to be able to create playlist with my mobile device and play them for my mobile device. Aiding in playlist creation it would be nice to be able to filter on things like genre etc. in the mobile device client.

So far I've played with ampDroid. Works great for playing videos, movies, and watching live TV. However, for music, can't see that it does much (unless I'm missing something). Same goes for the web client.

Like I said. Creating music libraries and serving them out is something new to me. Perhaps there are better software solutions to look at?

Since you're already using aMPdroid that's 90% set up. The thing you're missing is MyMusic

http://wiki.team-mediaportal.com/1_MEDIAPORTAL_1/13_Setup_Guides/Music#Settings_within_MediaPortal should explain how to configure music within MP. That will import your MP3 tag data. Once that's done it's on to MPExtended.

http://wiki.team-mediaportal.com/1_MEDIAPORTAL_1/17_Extensions/Remote_Access/MPExtended/Configurator has screenshots of the plugins section where you can point to the database MP is using. You probably need to restart the service (easily done from the MPExtended Configurator).

I hope that all makes sense.

MyMusic? What is it and where can it be found?

Edit: Ok... If MyMusic is simply the built in plugin that is talked about here and here in the Wiki, then I don't see how that gets me where I'm trying to go. That works fine for searching, filtering, creating playlist, shuffle play, etc. in MP, but I don't see how that helps me do the same with a mobile device client like ampDroid or the web interface. Unless I'm missing something on how to use ampDroid...

MyMusic is the MPExtended plugin used to access MediaPortal's built in music functionality. You can do:

Start > Run > MediaPortal Configuration

When the config GUI loads select the Music menu on the left, then select Music Database. You should see this - http://wiki.team-mediaportal.com/@api/deki/files/3827/=Config_MusicDatabase.jpg where you can add all the folders where you keep music. Select them all and click the Update button at the bottom right, you MP3 will be scanned for metadata and it will get added to the database. Restart MPExtended service and you should see music in aMPdroid and the web client.

See my edits to my previous reply. I've done all that. I can see music in ampDroid and the web client. I just can't do much with it.[DOUBLEPOST=1388504853][/DOUBLEPOST]On another note... So all these databases are stored on my C: drive. How big are they going to get? I'd like to minimize the content on my C: drive (drive with operating system and apps). If these databases will get large, is there a way to migrate them to another drive (my external hard drive for example)?

OK now that I've looked at this in a bit more detail it seems aMPdroid doesn't have any playlist functionality (I've never had cause to use them so I'd not noticed it was missing). Playlists are supported by MPExtended so maybe Eve or MPTVClient uses them. There's talk of a new version of aMPdroid coming soon, maybe DieBagger has added some new features. If not I guess it's one for the wish list...
