Like quite a few people, it would seem, I've got my movies on a separate computer and I'm trying to stream them across my home network to another computer running MP. Mine is mostly going to be doing the gaming thing, but acts as a wireless access point for the other computer to get onto the internet so there's no real lag on the home network aside from standard wireless issues. Connection is good (it ought to be, it's only 5m through a floor), and I've managed to get FTP sharing going. Here's my problem:
This setup is for my mom, and she's not what you'd call computer literate. The MP computer however has limited drive space and can't store all of the stuff I rip/download for her to watch. I'd like to have it simply start playing videos rather than spending a few minutes downloading the next episode or 20-30 minutes downloading a movie image. So the first question is, can you stream via FTP?
The next problem, related, is that it doesn't seem to be possible to download something and watch something else (like precache a file while watching an already downloaded one), because it keeps complaining about a remote file downloading. Is there a way to make the downloads work in the background on request through MP so that you can watch something else? If so, that more or less eliminates the first issue.
Lastly, network sharing doesn't seem to want to work (that was the first thing I tried), despite FTP being effective. Doesn't matter what \\ I use to access it (\\<computer name>, or \\192.168.0.1, which is the right address) nothing seems to want to share. The workgroups match, file and print sharing is active on both ends, the only difference between the two is one computer is XP professional and the other is XP professional x64 (my computer). Is there something I might be missing here that would make the network sharing work?
