Summary:
Show subtitles automatically if sound is muted

Area:
My TV

Description:
A nice feature of Windows Mediacenter is that it shows the subtitles from teletext (where provided) automatically if you mute the sound!

From Wikipedia: Teletext (en):

Teletext (or "broadcast teletext") is a television information retrieval service developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s. It offers a range of text-based information, typically including national, international and sporting news, weather and TV schedules. Subtitle (or closed captioning) information is also transmitted in the teletext signal, typically on page 888 or 777.

On this page you can find additional information about the topic, particularly the relevant teletext pages for Europe:
Wikipedia: Untertitel (de)

This would be a nice feature for Mediaportal too.

One thing though, if you use spdif/hdmi output to external receiver this is not possible as Mute does not mute the sound :) Allthough it sounds great.

I use SPDIF to output to a Yamaha receiver and still have control over the MP volume and mute functions.

And what about AC3/DTS etc. which are sent directy to your receiver without the OS doing anything at all?

Some audio HW has mute feature for even passthru formats. Or cource volume control is still disabled to those formats.
