I don't know if an answer exists to this question. I have searched but not a lot came up.

Is it possible for MP to sense when the TV (via HDMI) is turned off, and then for it to shutdown when this happens.

I ask because the GF doesn't turn off the client in the bedroom, she just turns off the TV and leaves the client playing whatever TV channel she was watching. This in turn prevents the server from shutting down as it sense the network activity and continues to stream.

Yes, I have told her several times to turn MP off first and then the TV, but as it doesn't involve shoes or handbags she doesn't listen.

I completely know your pain! I have gone through a months of trying to educate, but sometimes you have to take measures to overcome the limitations of others :)

I ended up buying a "One For All" remote, so that when the wife presses the off key the remote runs a macro which presses stop twice (to stop any live TV/music/video/radio etc), presses Home, Turns off the TV and then turns off the Amp.

The remote was pretty cheap (£18) but does a really good job and has a nice build quality (clearly there are better devices, but this one is a good price point for me and has a signal learning function which is very useful).

I still have the problem of the remote control being put on the shelf before the remote macro is completed, but usually this only causes the Amp to be left on (being the last in the macro command and having a less than optimal IR receiver).

Depending on your TV you might be able to use IRSS with an RS232 output from your TV, but I suspect it is a lot of work!
