Last night i switched on my HTPC and after showing the windows logo the gray bar appeared at the bottom and when it got to the end it just stopped and the computer didn't load any further, i tried safe mode, resetting the BIOS, nothing. I reinstalled Windows(over the top rather than losing all my media files). Now i can get into Windows fine, but the computers not very responsive, for example in Media Portal if i select a movie, it takes ages for the message to continue from where you left off or start from beginning, then if i select an option instead of instantly playing the movie the computer loads for a few minutes and then stutters as it begins to play the movie.

What could be causing these issues?

I'm dreading that the hard drive might be on the way out.

This might be trivial to you, but have you tried looking at the Performance and process resources to see what's bogging it down?

Can be many things. Try a hardware test utility, that checks memory cpu consistency.

yeah i might try both of those.. might get a free virus checker, check for ad-ware etc and also remove as many uneeded background tasks.

But in a few days im going to buy a new copy of XP Pro and a 320GB SATA drive, so do a fresh install, copy my media from the old drive and should work okay.. if it doesn't, its another peice of hardware. but am gonna upgrade HD anyways :)

    thanks :D
