So why is it so hard to play AVI files in MediaPortal? (1 Viewer)

Most of the movies I want to play in MediaPortal are AVI files. I can play them with Windows Media Center, Miro, Vuze and VLC without any problem whatsoever, but MediaPortal doesn't play them. Instead it says Video Codex = XVID and Audio Codec = MPEG Audio. Ihave spent the entire weekend trying to change the options and looking through pages of out-of-date solutions that don't seem to share any kind of consistency with each other.

Is it really this hard or am I just missing something?

I am running Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) on a Dell Studio XPS-16.

    Hi there,

In addition to what Tony/Owlroost said, you can install the LAV filters via the Mediaportal Extension Installer (MPEI).

    Hi Nigel,

I'm sorry I cannot offer any solution, but I too, have difficulty playing .avi's. So much so, that I eventually converted them all to .m4v files.

As both Tony and Jay suggest (above) I found that using the LAV filters helped, and also making sure that the LAV filters were set to use the GPU on the video card.

That's strange porky, did you try putting them in a mkv container (mkvmerge), takes under a minute and using the Lav filters, should play fine.

    Hi Ray,

I didn't do that... didn't know about it TBH  In fact the conversion to .m4v was part cure and part of an ongoing process to allow all video to be played on ipod/ mobile phones (the GF travels a lot in her job and thus has the time to sit and catch up with stuff.. it also keeps her off my back ;) )

It is not hard at all.. you just need the right codec(s). ;) I would try LAVF as suggested here already and all files should play fine. If you use MP 1.3.0 Alpha you can choose your codec for XviD/DivX explicitly in MP Config.

Try installing the LAV filter package - http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=156191 - and set the 'Video Codecs' - http://wiki.team-mediaportal.com/1_...guration/9_Codecs_and_Renderer/0_Video_Codecs - to be LAV Video and LAV Audio.

    Tony

Thanks for the suggestion Tony... I installed the LAV Filter Package and set the codecs to LAV as you had outlined, but to no avail. :(

An I'm getting a little bit wary of installing all these codecs on my laptop... I just finished configuring the ffdshow package, now the LAV package... How is this so easy for the other applications?

One thought - MP is a 32-bit app, so it needs 32-bit codecs (I think the LAV installer installs both 32 & 64 bit versions, so that should be fine).

Can you collect/attach logs please - see http://wiki.team-mediaportal.com/1_MEDIAPORTAL_1/16_Support/3_Forums/2_Log_Files

Some of the other players you mention have lots of codecs built-in, but MP uses whatever DirectShow filters are available on the PC - hence the need to have something like LAV installed (which will be installed by the MP installer in MP 1.3.0 onwards, to improve the 'out of the box' experience :) )
