I know you guys are keen for this feature, but I'm a little busy with some big changes to the way I interact with the MCE device ... I mean, really big changes.

But along the way I do need some other things to break up the work, so I'm going to try to get this in.

There's a couple of ways I can do it...

I could have it that the Set Top Box is told to turn on every time an external channel change is requested, and then told to turn off after a timeout. This is not optimal, but it's a start.

Or, I could put in time based schedules into the Event Mapper, something I've been meaning to do for some time. This would let you put in a command to turn off the STB every night... combined with turning it on whenever there is an external channel tune command... This is a bit better than the first one I think, but still not the best, except that it gets the time based events into the event mapper ... which as I say, is something I've wanted to do for some time.

Or, I could have it take note of scheduled recordings and turn the STB on and off at the beginning and end of scheduled recordings ... of course this would only be half the solution because you'd still need to be able to turn it on for just watching an external channel ...

It will probably be a combination of things to get the best functionality... so it's going to take a bit of trial and error...

I'll post back when I make some progress ... thanks for your enthusiasm ...

    Cheers,

Hey Aaron, thanks for the reply. This is just my own 2 cents based on my use of MP. But a time based function wouldn't really work for me as sometimes I record shows at odd hours (not usually, but sometimes). Or I may be up late (or get up early) watching TV.

My original thought was some sort of trigger like when you enter My TV, or when a recording starts. I've seen in the MP logs a bunch of events that startup whenever I turn on the TV, or when a scheduled recording starts. It could then turn off the STB whenever the TV engine is turned off, either because you're now listening to your music collection (or video collection) or you've turned off the TV, or the recording has ended.

I don't have any idea how easy or difficult or even if its possible this would be. But I appreciate you looking into it for us. I suspect that we are rather in the minority on this one as it seems most people either aren't using STBs or they just don't use it the same way I do.

For me, it would be a great convenience, but not really urgent. My STB has been on almost non-stop since January anyway! And neither it, nor my HTPC has exploded :)

Thanks Aaron for reply , i also really appreciate you looking into it for us.
The "some sort of trigger like when you enter My TV, or when a recording starts" solution sounds good also for me..but dont know how difficult can be.

    Thanks again
