Stutter in AC3 and DTS Passthrough from DVD not files from HDD (1 Viewer)

When I try to playback DVD using AC3 passthrough my reciever turns on the blue light and writes Digital sound 3/2.1 or what the source is... but the sound stutters and and is unusable...

The wierd thing is that DivX with AC3 audio playbacks just fine with no problems;
A DVD mirror on my HDD playback just fine;
And using PowerDVD 8.0 works fine with DVD when sending sound by SPDIF ?!?

I have played around with alot of settings in both FFDShow and AC3filter - with no luck.

The problem is the same in both MP, MPC and WMP...

I just tried disabling AC3 codeoc i FFDShow, but when playing in WMP the result was completely the same (audio stutter on reciever), but ofcause with no FDDShow icon in taskbar?!? What was then sending the signal to my reciever if not FFDshow?!?

I'm very fustratet for the moment as I think I normally have a good understanding of how the different codecs works, but this is beyond my understanding - at least for the moment

Try checking if the DMA mode from DVD drive has fallen to PIO mode.

LOL - Why is it allways the most simple solutions that you can not see?!? Ofcause that was the solution. I remember the problem from my old DVD drive way back...

For others is the way to go, to look in your device manager and set it up to view by connection so you easily can find the right IDE channel. And ofcause mine was in PIO mode for some reason.

If it doen't go back into UDMA mode after setting it up to "DMA if availble" and reboot, try this link:

Nice to see that it was so simple issue. If that keeps repeating many times then there is most likely some HW issue (MB / cabling / drive itself) as Windows IDE drivers will disable the DMA mode and start to use PIO mode after certain amount of transfer errors have happened in the IDE bus.

Gotcha!

The same problem nearly drove me crazy, I took me hours to sort it out. Finally, it was the DMA mode, who the hell knows why it was de-cativated....

To repair the settings, I used the vbs-script on MS website. Works fine.

Windows will deactivate the DMA mode on ATA devices when it receives enough errors (dont ask me what is the triggering error amount ). So it should be always hardware issue:

- Bad ATA cable
- Broken motherboard chipset
- DVD drive going to die
- Bad drivers (software issue)
